V-Audio Bass Knobs are designed as in-line RCA volume controls and require an RCA signal to operate. They function by attenuating (reducing) the signal passing through them. This typically means they are used with systems that include an external amplifier and speakers, rather than directly with powered or standalone speaker systems.
Standard RCA volume controls often introduce unwanted noise into the signal path due to the use of low-grade wiring, poor-quality RCA connectors, and inadequate shielding. V-Audio Bass Knobs are engineered to maintain high-resolution signal transfer both into and out of the device, preserving the integrity and clarity of your audio.
In addition, most universal RCA volume controls are designed for permanent or hard-mounted installation. In contrast, the V-Audio Bass Knob is designed to remain mobile—allowing you to keep it close at hand for convenient, precise, and easily accessible control.
The remote control supplied with most car amplifiers is a gain control, not a true volume control. A gain control adjusts the amplifier’s input sensitivity, which means it can increase the amplifier’s gain beyond the level set during system tuning. This can easily lead to signal clipping and distortion, potentially causing damage to your speakers or amplifier if the gain is raised too high.
In contrast, the V-Audio Bass Knob functions as an in-line RCA volume control. It only attenuates (reduces) the signal voltage from your source and cannot increase it. This ensures that you maintain safe, distortion-free operation without the risk of overdriving your amplifier or exceeding your tuned voltage levels.
If you experience a hum or buzz from your speakers when the V-Audio Bass Knob is turned down to zero, it is usually caused by interference entering the signal path through an RCA cable exiting the Bass Knob. This occurs when the connected RCA cable lacks adequate shielding, allowing electrical noise from nearby power cables or electronic devices to be induced along its length.
To eliminate this issue, ensure that you are using a properly shielded RCA cable.
